Learning Grammar from Basic to Advance

Grammar is the system of language. According to the opinion of my lecturer, whose name is Ibu Siti Yuliah, grammar is not skill such as writing, listening, reading and speaking, but it is a way to help you to improve your writing skill, listening skill, reading skill and speaking skill. to sharpen my ability in grammar, I am going to explain the grammar that I have learnt into three topics: parts of speech, passive voice, and relative clause in order that I always memorize and understand if they are written in my essay.
First of all, parts of speech can be divided into eight categories. They are adjectives, nouns, adverbs, verbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections. Those are the basis that you have to master. If you master them, you will easily follow the next topic in grammar because grammar applies sentence examples, and a sentence always engages to some parts of speech.
The next topic is passive voice. Maybe passive voice is quite easy from part of grammar. We only must change an active sentence to a passive sentence. However, you must know the basic formula in passive voice. It is composed by two elements: the appropriate form of the verb 'to be' and the past participle. To change an active sentence into passive you have to identify the object of the sentence. After that, you can put it as subject. Then, you add 'to be' plus past participle. For example, the sentence is "I kick the ball". It becomes "The ball is kicked by me". There is an important thing to know that all tenses have passive forms.
The last topic is relative clause. Relative clause or adjective clause is a dependent clause introduced by a relative pronoun(which, that, who, who, whose) or relative adverb(where, when, why). It is usually used to combine from two sentences into one sentence if they have the same subject or the same object. As I learnt in the second term, there are two different types of relatives clause: defining or restrictive and non-defining or non-restrictive. Non-restrictive is an adjective clause set off from the main clause by commas. For example, "Alice, who has a downhill bicycle, is diligent". On the other hand, an adjective clause that is restrictive should not be set by commas. For example, "A girl who sits in front of the class is my sister". I think this topic is more complicated than passive voice because you must combine two sentences into one sentence, and you must identify the same subject or the same object whether it is restrictive or non-restrictive.
In conclusion, to master a subject such as grammar, you have to learn from the basic topic to the advanced topic. However, the basic topic is the most important because if you do not understand it, you will not to be able to learn not only passive voice but also relative clause. The three topics are useful to assist you at least in writing subject.
Analysis of “The Gift” Short Story

Recently, there are so many texts that are related to language and culture such as short stories, novels, films, soap operas, songs, advertisements, newspaper/magazine articles, websites, brochures, or anything which has language in it. Each of them has its criteria and elements. In this essay, I would like to analyze a short story titled “The gift”. This story is about a couple that would like to celebrate Christmas, but they didn’t have enough money to buy a gift for their spouse. Then, this story tells about their sacrifice to buy the gift. In analysis this story, I only focus on three points: the setting of the story, the characterization of the story, and the language style of the story.
First, I will begin to analyze the setting of this story. This story held about 1930’s because the people in this story still used a pocket watch to keep his watch, and another fact says that there the person still sold her hair to get some money. Then, the story held in the western country because there is a tradition when the Christmas come, people have to give a gift to the other people whom they love. The weather in this story was cold because the people used their coat, and usually if the Christmas comes, the weather is also cold. In short, this story held in the past, and there was Christmas situation.
The second thing is the characterization of the story analysis. Characterization is techniques used by a writer to reveal what a character is like and how the character changes throughout the story. The characterization of this story is indirect technique. The writer shows what the character is like by describing what the character looks like. For example, the writer describes Jim who is the main character for men as a sincere person. It is shown when Jim made a sacrifice to sell his valuable thing for buying his wife a gift. The Jim appearance is also shown by the writer as a young man that has a thin body because he was a poor person. Then, the characterization of Della, the woman main character in this story is a courageous person because she was brave to sell her hair to get some money for buying her husband a gift. Moreover, she is a tough person that can hold out without a sheet hair in her head.
The last thing that I would like to analyze is the language style of the story. This story uses allegory language style. The place and event in this story have hidden meaning. It is because this is a retelling of an older story. In addition, hyperbole language style is also used in this story. For example, the story told “There were two possessions of which the Dillinghams were very proud. One was Jim’s gold watch, which had been his grandfather’s. The other was Della’s hair”. This story also uses denotation words that really hard to understand for the beginner readers. There are so many words that are not familiar in my understanding such as the “possessions” and “fixed upon” words.
In conclusion, I disagree with this story because the language of this story is too hard for the readers to catch the meaning and the message of the story. In addition, the diction in this story is not familiar in people’s understanding, so they have to look up their dictionary first to know the meaning of the words. However, this story is suitable for analysis because the writer uses the varieties of language style and technique to attract the reader’s attention.
The Making A Luscious Steamed Brownies

Have you ever tasted steamed brownies? I am sure that you have tasted that kind of food. Steamed brownies is one kind of brownies that is cooked in steam way. The ingredients are 300gr flour, 6egg, 50gr chocolate powder, 50gr milk powder, a teaspoon of baking powder, 250ml oil, and 300gr sugar. Beside the ingredients, we should also have mixer, sieve and another media that related to help us in making cake. Furthermore, it is not difficult to make the steam brownies if you have the ingredients needed, also follow the direction.
First of all, mix all eggs, sugar, and baking powder with the mixer until the dough congealed. It approximately takes twenty minutes. When you mix them up, you also have to stir the dough with stirring spoon.
After the dough congealed, make the second dough. Mix flour, chocolate powder, and milk powder up in other bowl. Strain them, and separate them into other bowl. Divide them into three parts, also the oil. Put them in to dough one by one part. For example, first you put one part of second dough with one part of oil. Stir them. Repeat that direction until the second dough finished.
Finally, after the dough is ready. Put dough into baking pan made from plastic in order to make easier when the cake is ready to be positioned in to the serving dish. Steam it in approximately thirty minutes. Serve it when the cake is lukewarm.
In conclusion, as you can see, it is quite simple to make a delicious steamed brownie. What we need just willingness and some effort to do those some directions. In the long run, if you have eagerness to make some business in culinary, so it can be one of ideas in making your business.
